Hoses and Fittings

Hoses and Fittings are two common industrial tools commonly used for various purposes today. The purposes that hoses and fittings are used depend on the project as well as the task at hand. The materials are specifically manufactured to perform certain tasks rather effectively and efficiently not to mention the fact that hoses and fittings make certain jobs easier and faster.

Hoses – hoses are typically a hollow tube that is commonly used to transfer fluids and other materials from one container to another. Sometimes hoses are referred to as pipes or tubes because its shape is often cylindrical with round cross sections in it. Hoses come in various forms and shapes and they also come with various types. There are air hoses, hydraulic hoses, fire hoses and flat hoses as well. Even if hoses have a lot of variations, these hoses are not made in a standard form. This is because hoses are designed and built to specifically meet its intended use. This is the reason why certain factors need to be considered when it comes to designing hoses. These factors would include the compatibility of hoses to house chemicals, its diameter, its length, its weight, size and its pressure ratings. Hoses are made through a combination of various materials such as nylon, polyvinyl chloride or PVC, polyethylene, polyurethane, natural rubber as well as synthetic rubber. With these various hose compositions, manufacturers keenly choose appropriate materials fit for the intended usage of the hose. They also consider the environment on where the hose will be used so they can determine the appropriate pressure rating for the hose.

Fittings – fittings are commonly used in order to connect two or more hoses together. At certain points two or more hoses needs to be attached to each other in order to spread and reach wider areas of application. In order to attach these hoses, fittings are used. There are also various kinds of fittings used for specific purposes. For instance, a plastic fitting is best used for lightweight and easy to carry hoses. An example of this is a garden hose. Because a garden hose is typically lightweight and it doesn’t need to withstand extreme water pressure, a plastic fitting can appropriately be used for this hose. However, for big tubes and pipes that also carry strong water pressure and needs to endure extreme temperature, a metal fitting should be considered. This is because when you use a plastic fitting to connect two big hoses together; there is a huge possibility that the connection will break which may cause damage and other safety problems. There are certain projects that require a strong and durable fitting. For projects that need a fitting that will endure pressure and other probabilities not to mention a fitting that will stay longer, brass fittings are more appropriate. This is because a brass fitting is durable and they don’t rust. They are also made of stronger and durable materials so there is no need to change fittings from time to time because brass fittings are designed to last for several years.

Hoses and fittings usually go together. This is because one or two hoses could not be attached and connected to each other without the help of a hose fitting.
